March 18: “An Evidence Addict Draws on Life Sciences to Keep the Faith”
Sunday Forum, 9:45am in the Fleetwood Room, American Cathedral in Paris.
One pilgrim’s journey from the notion that the origin of life is a cosmic joke, and that religion is but a by-product of genetic and cultural evolution, to a renewed trust in the Nicene Creed. Parishioner Peter Brooks, currently a lecturer in neurobiology with St John’s University, will suggest ways to embrace, and indeed worship, a necessarily “imperfect” Triplex Divinity. Adventures en route include the assassination, dissection and resurrection of altruism and the cultivation of “felicitous falsehoods” to fathom the Virgin birth, transubstantiation, resurrection, life after death, the problem of evil, original sin and atonement. Featuring an ephemerally intersex Jesus of Nazareth, and a supporting cast including our chimp cousins, Bertrand “Not Me” Russell, Walter Lippmann and other ambiguous souls.
THERE WILL BE NO FORUM ON PASSION SUNDAY, 25 MARCH, OR ON EASTER SUNDAY, 1 APRIL.
Our weekly Sunday Forum is an opportunity to discuss and explore topics ranging from politics to spirituality, economics, and literature with fascinating speakers and other interested individuals.
