“Unde Malum? Where Does Evil Come From?”. In this Forum, parishioner and theologian Anne Marie Reijnen looks at the age-old “problem of evil”. If God is all-powerful and all-loving, why is there evil in the world? Why does God seem to “allow” cruel behaviour, and catastrophes?
As a young parishioner reflected, “ God, we can cause chaos but you, Lord, could change our mistakes in a snap!” So why doesn’t God do so? Is sin the answer? Paul Ricoeur differentiates between “le mal” and “le malheur”: the first indicates deliberate evil inflicted on others, while the latter refers to the suffering caused by, for example, an earthquake.
Anne Marie discusses these ancient questions and some ageless answers to the problem of evil in God’s good creation.
