Cathedral Forum: The Irony of American Foreign Policy

Irony_foreign_policy.jpg

Building on his work archiving William Pfaff's papers in the cave of his Paris apartment, Christopher Schaefer speaks about the irony of American foreign policy. Pfaff's last book, The Irony of Manifest Destiny, echoed the title of Reinhold Niebuhr’s The Irony of American History, written almost 60 years earlier, as the Niebuhr brought his theological vision to bear on America’s Cold War foreign policy. As we enter what we might call “an inflection point” in American foreign policy, it seems worthwhile to revisit the ideas of these two noted commentators on American foreign policy.
