The Cathedral Forum: Waiting for God to Speak: The poetry of R.S. Thomas

Come explore with Dean Laird the works of Welsh poet and Anglican priest R.S. Thomas. His literary executor, Professor M. Wynn Thomas, described him as “the Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn of Wales, because he was such a troubler of the Welsh conscience”, while no less a poet than John Betjeman once predicted that Thomas’s poetry would remembered longer than his own.

Moments of great calm,

Kneeling before an altar

Of wood in a stone church

In summer, waiting for the God

To speaak; …

Prompt me, God;

But not yet. When I speak,

Though it be you who speak

Through me, something is lost.

The meaning is in the waiting.
