The Choir of the American Cathedral was founded in 1884, when the Choir School educated 16 boys who sang the offices daily in the manner of the great English and continental cathedrals. The Choir School was closed shortly after World War I, and women choristers were admitted. Today its singers provide music for more than 80 services each year, including weekly Sunday Eucharists, special feast days during the week, Solemn Evensongs, marriages and funerals. Recent concerts have included Handel's Messiah, Christmas Oratorio and St. John Passion of Bach, Stabat Mater settings of Palestrina and Pärt, motets of Brahms, Chichester Psalms of Bernstein, the Four Motets and Requiem of Duruflé, and large works of Britten, Howells, and Finzi. They have been recorded for radio broadcast by the BBC and Fréquence Protestante. Singers of all nationalities and faiths are admitted: a good level of English and strong sightreading and vocal skills. Rehearsals for the adult choir are on Thursday evenings from 7:00-9:00 pm; audition required. Contact Canon Zach Ullery, Canon for Music, at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
The Cathedral Children's Choir is open to all children ages 8 to 13 who like to sing and who can commit to our weekly rehearsal schedule. Building on the music education received in the Cathedral's "Intro to Music" class, the Children's Choir teaches children vocal production, music theory, sight-singing, and elements of music history; The Choir serves the Cathedral community by providing beautiful singing during Sunday worship. Singing in harmony is introduced through a repertoire from across the centuries, and occasionally includes four-part music sung with adult choir. Boys and girls rehearse separately but typically join together in singing on Sunday morning once a month and on special occasions. Rehearsals for the Children's Choir take place on Wednesday evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Contact Canon Zachary Ullery, Canon for Music, at email@example.com for more information.
The Cathedral Youth Choir is an auditioned group of singers ages 14 to 18 who sing with the Adult Choir three Sundays per month at the 11am service. Weekly rehearsals require a strong sense of commitment from those involved. Focusing largely on sacred music from the Anglican tradition, the youth choir sings compositions from many style periods and genres. The Youth Choir prepares teens for different types of ensemble singing in their adult lives. Rehearsals for the Youth Choir take place on Thursdays evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
