At last week’s annual convention of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe Bishop Whalon announced his resignation, effective in the spring of 2019. Two committees were formed to prepare for the election of a new bishop at next year’s convention. The Cathedral will be very much involved in the discernment process, and the new bishop will be consecrated here on Saturday, April 6, 2019 (save the date now!).
Four of us are particularly involved: Harriet Rivière and Anne Swardson are serving on the Transition Committee, and Nancy Janin and Dean Laird on the Search & Nomination Committee. We hope lots more of you will be involved as the time for the election, and then the consecration, draws closer.
We have been given a prayer to use in the next year as we search for a new bishop.
O God, we pray for the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe as we discern and elect a Bishop to serve your people, build up your Church and proclaim boldly the Gospel to the world. Send us, we pray, an Apostle who is a wise counselor, a merciful pastor, filled with your joy and grace. May your servant have the abundant gifts needed to lead your flock and the strength and courage to administer them. And may we renew and rededicate our lives to your will and service. All this we pray in the Name of our Great High Priest and Servant of the servants of God, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
AND – we have over a year to say a proper goodbye to Bishop Whalon, but it will no doubt go quickly. Let’s enjoy his presence and let him know how much we appreciate him while we can.
