Cathedral Pilgrimage to Holy Land: Day 4

Nablus and Samaria

"Our pilgrimage takes us from Christian Taybeh, north to Nablus where we visited with Cohen Husney Wasef, the high priest of the Samaritan community living on Mount Gerizim. The community claims that their worship is the true religion of the ancient Israelites before the Babylonian captivity. They believe that Mount Gerizim is the original Holy Place of Israel versus Mount Zion in Jerusalem...

We continued on stopping for a view of Nablus, a very prominent Palestinian commercial and cultural center in a region rich in archeological sites from the passage of every major civilisation since antiquity.  Here you can find holy places such as Jacob’s well and his son Joseph’s tomb.  An additional stop was made in Sebastia to visit the tomb of John the Baptist, now in the crypt beneath the site of a mosque, built during during the Ottoman Caliphate.

The day ended with a visit to the modern Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth, designed by Italian architect Giovanni Muzio and consecrated in 1969. The grotto, where the Archangel Gabriel annouced to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and bear the Son of God, Jesus, is located in the crypt."
