Exemplary character is said to have been disappearing in our times. The subject came front and center in the recent U.S. election contest, which a candidate of unprecedentedly questionable character won. Do we even recognize, much less honor, people of good character any more? New York Times columnist David Brooks did a brilliant walkup to this discussion in his 2015 bestseller, "The Road to Character". In it he studies eight people of shining character, from Dorothy Day to Samuel Johnson to St. Augustine, and offers lessons on how to follow their examples in our own lives. Parishioner Joe Coyle will analyze the book and lead a discussion on character.
