Weddings

The Church takes marriage very seriously: “Holy Matrimony is Christian marriage, in which two people enter into a life-long union, make their vows before God and The Church, and receive the grace and blessing of God to help them fulfill their vows” (Book of Common Prayer, p.861). Marriage is a sacramental rite of the Church, and a wedding is a sacred liturgy celebrating the sacrament. The Episcopal Church welcomes all couples.

The canons of the Episcopal Church require that at least one of the couple be a baptized Christian. The Episcopal Church welcomes and has authorized same-sex marriages. Divorced individuals, with approval from the Bishop, may be married in the Episcopal Church. The Episcopal Church also requires two witnesses to attest to the wedding ceremony.

A priest marries two people standing before him

We expect couples who come to the Cathedral seeking God’s blessing on their relationship will be open to a discussion of the spiritual nature of tier relationship and the place of God in their lives. To this end, several sessions of preparatory instruction are required of all couples. Meetings are scheduled at the mutual convenience of the officiant and the couple.

The American Cathedral in Paris operates under French law. Therefore, all couples to be married at the Cathedral must have had a legal civil marriage ceremony prior to their wedding at the Cathedral, whether or not they live in France. Couples are required to submit official documentation of their civil marriage before their wedding.

Wedding Vow Renewals

The American Cathedral in Paris offers wedding vow renewals to couples who wish to reaffirm their wedding vows before God. A wedding vow renewal is a simple service with a priest, implying a small number or no guests, and no music.
