Born in 1910, Pauli Murray was in many ways truly ahead of her time. A lawyer, civil rights activist, gender equality advocate, author, and priest, she lived a life of firsts: the first woman to study at Howard University’s School of Law, first African American to serve as deputy attorney general in California, the first African American to receive a doctorate in juridical sciences from Yale Law School and, in 1977, one of the first women—and the first African-American woman—to be ordained an Episcopal priest. Along the way, she became friends with, among others, Eleanor Roosevelt and James Baldwin. In this Forum, Del Kilhoffer presents her new book on the life of this extraordinary woman, Pauli Murray : Sainte, queer, féministe.
