The fastest-growing religion in the first-century Mediterranean was not Christianity – it was the cult of the emperor, which took root in the reign of Caesar August. In this Forum, parishioner Bill Tompson looks at the origins and claims of the imperial cult and, in particular, at the ways in which an understanding of its claims and language offers us a new perspective on the meaning of many New Testament texts, including the words and actions of Jesus and St Paul.
