This Sunday come discover Elie Neau (1662-1722), whose life is commemorated on September 7th in the Episcopal Church. A French Protestant refugee in the American colonies, one-time galley-slave and founder of the first school for enslaved Africans in colonial New York City, Neau’s extraordinary transatlantic journey led him first to l’Église du Saint-Esprit, a French-speaking parish that eventually joined the Episcopal Church is still today a Francophone Episcopal parish in the heart of Manhattan, and later to Trinity Church, Wall Street, where he served for fifteen years as a catechist among slaves and Native Americans and where he was buried in 1722. In this Forum led by Joris Bürmann, we will see how his legacy can inspire us today in our mission to become Beloved Community.
