Cathedral Forum: Reading the Gospel according to St Mark

  • The American Cathedral in Paris 23 Avenue George V Paris, IDF, 75008 France (map)

Our Sunday lectionary runs in a three-year cycle, with each year (imaginatively designated years A, B and C by those who structured the lectionary) organised around one of the first three gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke. As we start a new liturgical year this Sunday, parishioner Bill Tompson presents an overview of Mark’s Gospel, which will frame our Sunday lectionary readings for the year ahead (year B, in case you were wondering). Generally reckoned to be the oldest of the four gospels and definitely the shortest, it is written less to tell us who Jesus is than to show us. Come find out what we (think we) know about the origins of this gospel, about its distinctive themes and emphases, and – above all – about what you can listen for it as you hear it read week by week at the Cathedral.

Our Cathedral Forum series provides occasions to discuss topics ranging from politics to spirituality, economics, and literature, with fascinating guest speakers. The Forum seeks to help parishioners deepen their understanding of Christian faith and life, drawing on scripture, reason and tradition to understand its relevance to our lives and to our world, attentive to God's hand in the co-evolution of our world and of our church.

This is a hybrid forum; please join us in the Parish Hall or on Zoom.
