The values of the Western world originated in, and still reflect, its Christian heritage. A central tenet is that all of humanity is entitled to fairness, and at least acceptable lodging, food and health. Yet such a moral stance is far from universally shared, especially among many with economic and executive power. Recent decades have seen increasingly overt rejection of such claims in the name of individual liberty. What could nudge this resistance toward policies to fulfil basic entitlements? Peter Brooks, lecturer in neurobiology, will discuss proposed “moral enhancements,” based on persuasion or technological advances such as biohacking. Is there any hope for these naive tweaks, or will only the fear of pitchforks move the moral compass of the powerful?
Our Cathedral Forum series provides occasions to discuss topics ranging from politics to spirituality, economics, and literature, with fascinating guest speakers. The Forum seeks to help parishioners deepen their understanding of Christian faith and life, drawing on scripture, reason and tradition to understand its relevance to our lives and to our world, attentive to God's hand in the co-evolution of our world and of our church.
This is a hybrid forum; please join us in the Parish Hall or on Zoom.
