In this Forum, parishioner Bill Tompson provides a brief overview of the French historian, literary critic and theologian René Girard, exploring the way Girard’s understanding of the psychology of desire and his ideas about the universality of the scapegoat mechanism in human societies offer a new way to understand the Christian gospel. In an age when the scapegoating of the Other so dominates our politics, Girard’s insights may also offer a new way of understanding the challenges and conflicts that our societies face today.
