Bruno Latour, a social scientist and devout Catholic, struggled to speak about his faith: on the one hand, everyone “on the inside” knew the stories, the liturgy, and the rest – sometimes to the point of nonchalance. The non-believers or no-longer-believers he met wondered how one could really buy into Christianity: the same words, liturgy, and beliefs seemed literally unbelievable to them. This forum, led by parishioner Jocelyn Phelps, traces Latour's search for what to say about our faith and above all, how to say it (inspired by his book Jubiler, ou les tourments de la parole religieuse (“Jubilate: Tormented by the Word”).
Our Cathedral Forum series provides occasions to discuss topics ranging from politics to spirituality, economics, and literature, with fascinating guest speakers. The Forum seeks to help parishioners deepen their understanding of Christian faith and life, drawing on scripture, reason and tradition to understand its relevance to our lives and to our world, attentive to God's hand in the co-evolution of our world and of our church.
This is a hybrid forum; please join us in the Parish Hall or on Zoom.
