Cathedral Forum | Christian Nationalism in Historical and Contemporary Contexts

  • The American Cathedral in Paris 23 Avenue George V Paris, IDF, 75008 France (map)

Join the Convocation’s Archdeacon, the Ven. Dr. Walter J. Baer, for this week’s Cathedral Forum which will discuss the topic of Christian Nationalism. Although this is today associated particularly with contemporary US-American Evangelicalism, it has a very long tradition. At its basis, we are dealing here with interaction and mixture of the Christian faith and national or ethnic identity. This interaction can be productive, it can be problematic, it can become toxic, and even horrific. We will look at this phenomenon briefly historically, then take brief look at early 20th century forms of Christian Nationalism among the powers in World War I, and then the internal church conflict in Nazi Germany. Then we will look at the specifically “White Christian Nationalism” of late 20th and early 21st century US-America. Today’s Christian Nationalism is a particularly toxic manifestation of a long-standing phenomenon which it is important to resist..

Our Cathedral Forum series provides occasions to discuss topics ranging from politics to spirituality, economics, and literature, with fascinating guest speakers. The Forum seeks to help parishioners deepen their understanding of Christian faith and life, drawing on scripture, reason and tradition to understand its relevance to our lives and to our world, attentive to God's hand in the co-evolution of our world and of our church.

This is a hybrid forum; please join us in the Parish Hall or on Zoom.
