A French humorist once quipped, “Love your neighbor ... you’ve been preaching that for 2000 years, but no one has ever found the user’s manual.” Peacemaking was high on the agenda at the Episcopal Church’s General Convention last June; and in Florence last October, the Convocation’s Convention adopted a resolution inviting each congregation to consider “how we as individuals can be peacemakers ourselves and do our part to cause God’s reign of justice and mercy to be known on earth as it is in heaven”. In this Forum, parishioner Jocelyn Phelps, who attended the Florence Convention in her role as Convocation Safeguarding Officer, will explore some practical approaches to peacemaking, used in contexts as varied as favelas and corporate meeting rooms.
