The Cathedral Forum: The Crisis of Colonial Anglicanism, Empire Slavery and Revolt in The Church of England

In this Forum, Professor Martyn Percy, Canon Theologian to the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe, explores the challenge facing the Church of England and the whole of the Anglican Communion as we confront the legacies of the English Church’s history as the spiritual arm of Britain’s imperial project, with all that that entailed, including its implication in slavery, exploitation, racism and classism. Religious, social and political imperialism thrived on deprecating others, but those once marginalised have fought for equality and independence. Today, the Communion faces a new era of moral reckoning. So does the Episcopal Church, as it faces its own history as an institution profiting both directly and indirectly from slavery.

Now Professor of Religion and Culture in the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy at University of Saint Joseph in Macao and Provost of Ming Hua Theological College, Martyn Percy is also the only living theologian mentioned in The Da Vinci Code.
