The 19th-century Danish philosopher and theologian Søren Kierkegaard observed, “There are many people who reach their conclusions about life like schoolboys; they cheat their master by copying the answer out of a book without having worked the sum out for themselves.” He was referring, apparently, to the common use of creeds and catechisms to teach the Christian faith. But is a catechism, or as our prayer book calls it, “An Outline of Faith,” so bad? Indeed, it is found in the back of the Book of Common Prayer. In this Forum, Interim Dean Timothy Safford explores the catechism, finding that it does not provide easy answers to cosmic questions, but rather invites us to ponder, study, wonder, and question. Lent is a traditional time to review the church’s catechism, along with those preparing for baptism at Easter. This Sunday’s forum will be a quick journey through its simplicity and brilliance.
